Brent Bowman Exhibition Opening

14 September 2018 @ 5:30 pm - 8:30 pm

Join us for an artist’s reception celebrating the opening of Brent Bowman‘s first solo show with live music by classical guitarist Christopher Whitney and pianist Annalisa Ventola.

Brent Bowman is a graduate of the Columbus College of Art And Design with a degree in Illustration. A lifelong comics fan, Brent has been drawing since he was old enough to pick up a pencil. His work has appeared in publications by Image Comics, Caliber Press and NBM Publishing. Brent has been nominated for the prestigious YALSA award and the ALA Amanda Bloomer Award. He has also won the small press SPACE prize in 2015, 2017 and 2018 for both his comics work in both graphic novels and short form comics. He lives in Columbus Ohio with his wife and two boys.

Christopher Whitney is a Columbus area guitarist and teacher who has performed extensively in the genres of rock, blues, country, and classical music. For this special event, he will be performing 14 Mini Etudes by Jean-Maurice Mourat. Mourat (b. 1946) is a french guitarist and composer who in addition to publishing many works for guitar and other instruments, has had a distinguished career as a conservatory director. 14 Mini Etudes is a collection of easy pieces for beginning guitarists, the musicality of which are exceptional for pieces of this level and as much fun to listen to as they are to play.

Annalisa Ventola is a Columbus-based composer-performer immersed in classical piano and neo-classical pop art song. She studied at Ohio State University under Dr. Donald Gren (a protégé of Nadia Boulanger) and established her own teaching studio at Whitney and Ventola Music Studios. Inspired by Bowman’s work, Annalisa will be performing the Album for Young People by Aram Khachaturian (1903 -1973), a Soviet Armenian composer and conductor. Written between 1926 – 1947 and playable by elementary and intermediate pianists, the pieces in this album nod to Khachaturian’s Armenian roots, with a touch of the avant garde, and good dose of humor.

The Upstairs Arts Space is located in the Beechwold Building at Sheffield and High (next to Beechwold Hardware). Enjoy the off street parking, and look for the stairs behind the stone facade. This is a family-friendly event.
